Description
This book looks at three different perspectives of the Fleurieu Peninsula – 20,000 years ago, the present, and time-travelling back billions of years.
It will discuss the formation of the Earth – there are some very old rocks on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The old sediments were deposited in subsiding basins, on what was then the east coast of Australia, before being hit by a massive tectonic plate which folded and heated up the Fleurieu Peninsula’s rocks. Following this, a lot of rocks are missing (due to the area being land) before the Permian glaciation, where the Fleurieu Peninsula was covered by gigantic glaciers. Finally, after more missing rocks, young rocks were deposited in warm seas with many fossils.
A lot has happened for us to exist in the 21st century and humanity should be contemplating its luck – because if the story was replayed, it is highly unlikely that Homo sapiens would be here!
This journey will look at times of mountain building and of glaciation, deltas, rivers, and lakes with megafauna!
The story commences with the Big Bang, the Universe, the Milky Way, and the Solar System before looking at some rocks.
If the reader is new to geology and wants to get an idea about the different type of rocks and processes that will be discussed later in the text, Appendix 1 provides some of the fundamentals of geology. Also, keep an eye on the Glossary section at the back for when new terms arise, and I have not explained them adequately. If all else fails, use Google!
The second part of the book will take you on 14 geological field trips on the Fleurieu Peninsula if you want more detail than you read in the first part.
